Sean’s Triathlon Journey to become an IRONMAN

Started my tri journey at the end of May with at the time an unrealistic goal of Ironman Western Australia at the end of 2024 in the me back of my mind. Triathlon filled the gap for the motivation and fulfilment I had been lacking at the time. I’m sure anyone who has trained for triathlons knows how much of a lonely sport it can be, but the sense of accomplishment crossing the line and the personal transformation along the way make every training session worthwhile. The long nights/mornings and ‘turned down pints’ make running down the finishing chute and ringing the “first-timer” bell worth every second.

Most of the credit has to go to my coach/friend Stuart at @readytotri_bne . I met Stuart six months ago originally with the goal of him teaching me to swim and decided to start full time coaching with him considering how clueless I was at the time. Stuart’s there every step of the way, his knowledge and passion for endurance events/Ironman is unmatched, he instilled me with confidence going into my first tri, 70.3 in Sunshine Coast back in September and when I mentioned the possibility of travelling to Busselton for Ironman WA straight after his words were ‘just book it’.

I couldn’t recommend him enough to anyone thinking of getting into triathlons both in and outside of Brisbane/Australia. Thanks again Stuart for all your work and the people you introduced me to along the way that inspired me – special mention to @livvmeland , as Stu put it Monday morning, people like you make this sport worthwhile and that final 10k lasted a lifetime but so will the memory of running down that finishing chute together – huge congrats to you.

Thanks to everyone along the way who contributed or supported me along the journey, friends, family, my training partners and now Ironmen Shane and Tom, triathletes I’ve met, kudos gave or even those who joined for a casual run there’s too many to name. It’s worth more than the miles.

I couldn’t recommend Ironman enough for anyone looking to get started on their tri journey.

Anything is possible.
